Summer is right around the corner.
Fashion enthusiasts are used to
welcoming the re-emergence of gingham prints, light cotton, and airy linens;
however, fans of airy summer looks may be somewhat disappointed this year as
grunge girl glam is making its way into the fashion spotlight.

Grunge fashion came
into existence in the 1980s–90s and is characterized by flannel shirts, ripped
jeans, and floral dresses paired with heavy boots.
As is the case with
many fashion sub-genres, grunge emerged thanks to the converging influences of
music, politics, and philosophy, thus representing a younger generation that
resented the idolization of money and social class.
The original grunge
generation were seen as rebels of their time, shunning mainstream fashion in
favor of subversive looks. Several celebrities who continue to hold great
influence today first came to prominence during the original grunge years, some
of whom you will certainly know.
Arguably, the most
famous couple to come out of the period were Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and
Courtney Love of Hole, the most rock-n-roll of couples. Love was instantly
recognizable for her ability to effortlessly merge old Hollywood glamor with
standard grunge, pairing silk baby doll dresses with bejeweled crowns, unkempt
hair, and a crisp red lip.
But grunge is
currently undergoing a 21st century revamp. Massively influential celebrities
such as
Kourtney Kardashian, Megan Fox, and their respective partners have been
adopting gothic-grunge aesthetics, helping them carve their own niche on the
fashion stage.
While gothic and
grunge fashions are two distinctive categories — characterized by differing
fashion, music, and art tastes — celebrities and everyday fashion lovers have
been drawing influence from both sources of inspiration.
Kardashian, in
particular, has undergone a significant image overhaul. In the run-up to her
recent wedding with
Travis Barker, Kardashian was seen out and about in a
gothic black mini-dress and black veil, clearly demonstrating to the world that
this look is here to stay.
The combination of
religious imagery, black netting, azure trimmings, and the bejeweled tiara was
an obvious nod to the influences of the original grunge generation. The look
would not have appeared out of place if it were seen on Courtney Love 30 years
ago.
Grunge is not
solely limited to the newfound love amongst celebrities; the look has also been
making its way into the world of high fashion.
Original
grunge-goth girl Winona Ryder has recently released a campaign with Marc
Jacobs, modeling the new J Marc shoulder bag while sporting a series of grungy
looks. In one shot, Ryder is seen wearing a silky slip dress of turquoise and
black, paired with chunky heels and black nails. In another, Ryder
clasps a fluorescent orange J Marc bag while wearing a long black netted dress
and impressively huge gothic platforms.
Although the looks
present in this campaign are the work of a stylist, Ryder’s original grunge
style has been carefully reimagined for the 21st-century high-fashion stage.
The contrasting use of luxury fabrics, fluorescent colors, and fundamentally
gothic footwear gives a chic nod to the looks of the 90s.
It’s hard not to be
inspired by the growing influence of the rethought grunge. The good news?
Grunge glam is fairly easy to achieve.
Layering your
garments is a key element of the original grunge look and is well suited to the
streets of
Amman. Think about pairing long silky slip dresses with long-sleeved
cotton t-shirts or wearing baggy leather jackets over delicate lace tops.
Contrast is key,
with the essence of grunge being achieved with a combination of classically
masculine and feminine garments.
For a more
classically laid-back grungy style, look towards the influence of younger
celebrities and models such as
Bella Hadid and
Olivia Rodrigo. Rodrigo has
garnered attention for her grunge-influenced look, even butting heads with
Courtney Love over perceived similarities between their creative imagery.
However, she
provides an excellent example of classic grunge fashion for the modern era —
pairing glittery slip minis with heavy boots, often wearing her hair tousled
while sporting 90s-inspired choker necklaces.
As grunge was founded on the rejection of capitalist
principles, it involves an element of creative thinking and thrifting. While
you can pick up pieces that play into grunge fashion from the mall, it is
essential to be creative with what you have and think about how to layer and
restyle the items in your closet.
Before purchasing
something new, first, play around with your current wardrobe, or head to
Friday Market or the thrift stores to pick up some vintage pieces.
Friday Market is a
haven of vintage American fashions, and you can certainly find oversized tops
and battered jeans for an authentically 90s grunge look.
Grunge girl summer
is being seen at all levels of the fashion world, and now you know just how to
join it.
