As a
beauty junkie, one of my life’s greatest pleasures is undoubtedly taking a trip
to the salon for a fresh manicure. Anyone who loves beauty treatments can agree
that a set of freshly painted extensions offers a unique feeling of confidence,
and the longer, the better.

Before moving to
Amman, I was in a committed relationship with acrylic extensions, especially
since I have had them intermittently over the past 10 years. With initial
disgruntlement, I found that very few salons in Amman offer acrylic options, as
many preferred to work with gel when creating extensions. Thus, I tried gel out
with great wariness, not believing it could match up to my much-loved acrylic
manicures.
However, after six
months of gel extension upkeep, I have seen the light and cannot imagine
returning to acrylic nails any time soon. Gel is softer on your nails, feels
slightly more flexible, and natural, and creates a beautiful jelly-like finish
— what’s not to love?
Being forced to
step outside a self-imposed beauty boundary brought great positives,
introducing me to a new beauty treatment that I likely would never have tried
back in the UK. So, with that in mind, I was interested to find out what other
micro-trends exist within the salons of Jordan and what client habits reveal
about nail preferences and trends in 2022.
Nail art has taken
off massively across social media over the past couple of years, with several
influencers making their living solely through posting nail content. Accounts
such as @overglowedit have led the way in creating this year’s manicure trends,
using bold, bright patterns to inject a sense of individuality into their
beauty style.
Instagram has been
awash with Powerpuff Girls-inspired heart nails, multicolored checkerboard
designs, and cutesy cherry prints. Gen Z has adopted nail art with full force,
firmly stamping their generational sense of style on the modern manicure.
Interestingly,
bold nail art has also proved to be hugely popular in Jordan, with many nail
enthusiasts willing to take risks with their designs. I spoke to nail
technician Anna Sójka (@annadoesnails89) about the nail trends she’s witnessed
since starting work in Amman, having moved from Germany last year to open up
her home-based nail salon in late 2021.
Anna explained,
“Girls here, like anywhere in the world, are trying to follow the trends,” but
“definitely they are more open for designs here than in Berlin (which I am so
happy about).” Anna’s Amman client base is of a slightly younger demographic
than her Berlin client base, which she suggested may be a reason for the
proliferation of bold nail art.
She explained
further, “My client base here and in Berlin is a little bit different — in
Berlin, most of my clients were company owners, beginner actresses, or
full-time moms.” However, in Amman, “most of my clients are young girls and
women, so there are a lot of differences … in Berlin, I mostly used to do nails
in classic red, nude, or French on really short, or medium-length nails —
usually in almond/oval shape. Here girls love long nails with designs; they are
brave enough to go for crazy colors.”
While classic
designs such as French manicures are undoubtedly popular, it’s interesting to
hear that the younger generation in Amman is willing to make bold statements
with their nail designs. Individuality and fashion-savviness are clearly
important to beauty lovers in Amman, and a desire to try out bright colors and
patterns gives nail techs freedom to experiment with new styles.
However, there are
some notable classic favorites in the salons. White nail polish is a staple of
Amman salons, as is a squarer-shaped extension. Anna has found that aside from
bold nail art, clients tend to love “square shaped nails (classic-square or ballerina/coffin)
and plain white nail polish, especially in the summer!”
She joked, “I’ve
never used that many white gel polish bottles in my life!”
Whether this
reflects classic nail trends or a resurging love for delicate white nails as
induced by Hailey Bieber’s recent revelation of her go-to manicure — it’s
impossible to tell.
Social media often
dictates prevailing beauty trends, whether related to makeup, skincare, or
fashion — so it’s no wonder the younger generation is paving the way with
adventurous and fashion-forward nail designs. And through sharing their
developing beauty journeys across Instagram and TikTok, we can see just how to
brighten up our everyday looks.
For anyone looking
to be bolder and more adventurous with their manicure choices, I recommend
going through the Instagram discover page or the many inspiration boards on
Pinterest. Alternatively, let your nail technician loose on your nails and give
them the free reign to try something new.
Thanks to Anna’s input and
expertise, I have mustered the courage to try a couple of designs over the past
six months — although only on a nude base. Finding a nail technician you trust
to do a great job is key to being experimental with your beauty choices, and I
cannot recommend enough the benefits of trying out a few salons until you find
one you love.
