Since the beginning of the conflict in Syria, Roula Alajeh,
founder and president of Bareeq Education and Development, has been a relief
activist in Syria and Jordan. In an interview with
Jordan News, Alajeh said
that when she visited Za’atari refugee camp, she noticed that schools were
under pressure due to the enormous number of students.

“It was difficult to open an educational center in
Za’atari refugee camp,” even though there was need such centers to teach Syrian students
in Amman. The center was opened in the Hai Nazzal area and accepts Syrian and
Jordanian students.
Bareeq provides an opportunity for Syrian and Jordanian
students to meet and get to know each another in the spirit of fraternity and
love.
“Bareeq welcomes people of all nations, religions, and
ethnicities to participate in its programs,” she said, as she believes that
every child deserves the chance to reach his full potential.

“An appropriate education of all children is the only way to
achieve human dignity, happiness, fulfillment, and a brighter future,” said
Alajeh.
The center offers literacy education services for adults,
programs, and courses to empower women, as well as education and university
scholarships. It has 420 students of both genders from grade two to 12, 11
certified teachers, supervisors, and university students who are sponsored by
Bareeq.
The center launched a commercial company, Amber and Musk
that has a positive impact on women in business, according to Alajeh. It
focuses on early investment, education, training, and encouraging women as part
of a holistic entrepreneurial assistance program for women. Furthermore, Amber
and Musk have teamed up with Bareeq to support women empowerment.

Alajeh said that the center relied on personal donations
from family and friends until 2021, when UOSSM USA provided financial support
for a year.
“We are working to secure a fund for the second year,” she
mentioned.
The top challenges that Bareeq had faced was reaching
children and their families during the pandemic, and lack of devices or poor
internet connection, she added.
“We organized a donation campaign to provide the children
and their families with devices,” she said.

Obstacles include persuading parents to send their girls to
the facility to learn, and the fact that children as young as 14 and 15 work to
support their parents with household expenses, and so they are unwilling or have
no time to study.
“Bareeq’s role is to raise awareness about the importance of
education and to provide support to parents to educate their children,” Alajeh
said.
An uneducated generation is a big loss for production and a
major social issue for the entire world. Education, she said, is essential to
creating a productive society, adding “Bareeq Center supports children and
women academically and morally”.

The center also organizes food campaigns during
Ramadan,
distributing food baskets to the less fortunate in Jordan and Syria, and relief
campaigns to be able to distribute clothes, school bags, and others needed
goods.
Recently Bareeq launched an OpenSea account where
individuals can buy Bareeq’s NFTs “in order to serve essential demographics –
women and children in the Arab region afflicted by war and strife”.
