AMMAN —The
Jordan national basketball team needs “major support and a huge budget” to
prepare for the upcoming World Cup, said
Mohamed Alayyan, the president of the
Jordan Basketball Federation (JBF).

The
tournament will be hosted by Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines this year.
After a
recent meeting with the national team’s coach, Wisam Al-Sous, before their trip
to India, resulted in the development of a preliminary plan for the next phase
of the World Cup qualification,
Alayyan said.
He added that
the plan is a priority for the JBF, but it requires a significant effort from
the Jordan Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Youth. This is because the
federation needs sufficient support to provide the team with the financial
support needed to achieve the plan, he added.
The Falcons
secured their place in the 2023 FIBA World Cup for the third time in their
history, and for the second consecutive tournament on Friday, after Saudi
Arabia’s loss to New Zealand.
‘Least
possible resources’Alayyan confirmed that Jordan's qualification was achieved "with the least
possible resources," adding that the team needs “great support to prepare
for the World Cup” and a “huge budget to participate,” especially given that the
World Cup will feature strong teams such as the US, Spain and France.
Replacing
coach is ‘difficult’Alayyan hinted at the continuation of coach Sous in his position, saying that it is
difficult to change a coach who has led the team to the World Cup.
The
president added that there is great confidence in Sous and the administrative
and technical staff who successfully achieved the task of qualifying for the
World Cup.
The
Jordanian national team's training camp program will be based on the teams that
will be in the same group as them, he added.
The World
Cup draw will take place on April 29, 2023, in Manila, Philippines.
Jordan’s
Crown Prince, HRH Hussein, congratulated the national basketball team on their
qualification for the World Cup in an Instagram post. The post included a
picture of the team's stars, with the comment: "Our Falcons are flying to
the World Cup… Congratulations."
Jordan's
best performance to date was a 23rd-place finish in Turkey during their debut
in 2010.
