DOHA — On Tuesday, Abdullah Shelbayh, the promising
20-year-old Jordanian tennis player, returned to the ATP 250 Qatar ExxonMobil
Open for the second consecutive year, facing off against Australian World No.
46 Alexei Popyrin. Despite being pegged back by the more seasoned Popyrin in a
three-set battle, Shelbayh's impressive play and aggressive net strategies
earned him admiration from fans and accolades from the Qatar Tennis Federation
President, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi. Al-Khelaïfi decided to reward Shelbayh with a
wildcard for the US$1.39m event. This decision underscores the close ties
between Qatar and its Gulf neighbors, such as Jordan, as evidenced by their
recent encounter in the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023™.
