AMMAN — Zara Najjar, the recently appointed new captain of the national women’s basketball team, reflects on her participation in the 2021 Asia Championship and the subsequent loss in the final match against Lebanon (40-80) as a pivotal juncture in her journey. During her discussion with Jordan News, she shared that playing under the weight of the crowd's expectations during this match has left an indelible mark on her. She acknowledged that their mental and emotional readiness was not entirely complete to face such a challenging trial. She conveyed, "Today, we are not far from participating at the top level of the Asia Championship. We have a number of young players, which requires us to invest in the game to achieve results." Expanding on this, she added, "We need to show hunger and desire to win in the upcoming Asia Championship. We are excited for the tournament, we have high readiness, and we hope to quality for the top level of the Asia Championship." Off to the second-level finals The national team is diligently preparing to participate in the second-level finals of the Asia Championship, set to be held in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, from August 13 to 19. The draw for the 2023 Asian Championship has placed the national women's team within Group 2, alongside Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, while Group 1 features Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, and Mongolia. Zara underscores the profound sentiment and significant responsibility that accompanies leading the national team. She articulates, "I have accompanied many experienced players like the Nasser sisters, Lubna and Dina, and I have understood the roles and importance of leadership, which has qualified me today alongside the confidence of my teammates and their cooperation with me." She commends the unwavering support of the basketball federation for women's basketball and extends a hopeful wish that the fans will continue to champion the players, thereby motivating them to achieve remarkable feats.
