MARRAKESH — On Friday evening, Morocco experienced a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. According to a provisional report, the earthquake killed 296 people in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant.

The epicenter was located in the High Atlas Mountains, 71 km southwest of Marrakesh. The quake, which struck at 23:11 local time, was followed by a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later.
