The National Charter of Ethics for Artificial Intelligence will include key principles and guidelines that prop up a responsible and ethical implementation of AI technology in the Kingdom while simultaneously fostering creativity and a stimulating investment environment, said a statement released Tuesday by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship.

The committee is leveraging artificial intelligence technologies to review and analyze international best practices and identifying key points and shared principles with most countries, with the aim of highlighting the importance of AI, and its role in utilizing resources and saving time and effort.

According to the statement, the draft charter complies with the UNESCO’s recommendations on the ethics of artificial intelligence, which Jordan took part in formulating and was adopted by all of the 193 member states, making it the first international agreement that identifies the common values and principles necessary to ensure the development of artificial intelligence in an effective manner.

In December 2020, the Cabinet passed the 2020 Jordanian Artificial Intelligence Policy, after which the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship held several discussions and interactive workshops in cooperation with the non-profit organization Jordan Open Source Association.

A host of AI and legal experts, as well as rights advocates, participated in the workshops, which introduced the main goal of drafting the charter, and tackled a set of related principles and guidelines. Based on the outcomes of the workshops, the ministry formed the committee to draft the national charter, headed by the ministry, which began operations in the middle of the current year.
