AMMAN —
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh
Kharabsheh announced Tuesday the basis on which renewable energy projects with
a capacity of more than 1MW can be implemented, stressing the importance of the
decision to reviving the national economy, attracting more investments, and
expanding job opportunities, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

The ministry
stipulated that the industrial investment should be either new or entail the
expansion of an existing one, and that an energy performance assessment study
should be submitted before work on the project begins.
It also stipulated
that no less than 70 percent of the project’s workforce must be Jordanian.
Alongside this, the product must fulfill the conditions of local origin and
domestic sales do not exceed 50 percent of total sales, or be a new product.
The ministry
stressed the importance of a prospective enterprise’s commitment to any
directives issued by the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Authority, including
net metering and transit, among others.
Kharabsheh said
that the decision will cover the consumption of new investors or expand the
current consumption, including net measurement or transit projects, prior to
the establishment of their investments and by projected consumption and
technical determinants on the electrical grid.
Work is
currently under way to prepare a mechanism to implement the principles
contained in the Cabinet decision, the minister said, stressing the importance
of the decision in the framework of the ministry’s efforts to expand the
exploitation of renewable energy sources and raise the percentage of their
contribution to electricity generation from the current 26 percent to 50
percent by 2030.
Kharabsheh urged
national companies working in the field of renewable energy to take advantage
of the investment opportunities available in the sector, especially that Jordan
enjoys abundant resources of renewable energy due to its location on the solar
belt, a large number of sunny days, and the availability of expertise that
allows for increased reliance on renewable energy sources in the total energy
mix.
