Jordan’s classification remained in the category of
“countries with high human development”, according to the report which was seen
by
Jordan News.
Titled “Uncertain Times, Unsettled Lives: Shaping
our Future in a Transforming world”, the report indicated that for the first
time in 32 years, the HDI, which measures the health, education, and standard
of living of countries, had decreased globally for two consecutive years.
The overall value of the index issued for the year
2021, against which countries are measured, is 0.720; in Jordan, the average
life expectancy at birth is 74.3 years, the average expected years of learning is
10.6 years, and per capita income as a share of the GDP is $9,924 annually.
The value of the index for Jordan has changed
between 1990 and 2021 from 0.622 to 0.720, a change of 15.8 percent.
Between 1990 and 2021, the average life expectancy
at birth in Jordan improved by 4.4 years, the average years of education
improved by 5.4 years, while the per capita share of GDP improved by about 31.1
percent between 1990 and 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of
Ukraine topped the list of events that caused major global upheaval, together
with sweeping social and economic transformations, dangerous planetary changes,
and massive increases in polarization.
The HDI is used to question national policy choices,
and how two countries with the same level of per capita GDP can end up with
different human development outcomes.
It simplifies and captures only a portion of what human
development entails. It does not reflect inequality, poverty, human security,
and empowerment, among others. The Human Development Report Office provides
other composite indicators as a broader alternative to some of the key issues
of human development, inequality, gender disparity, and poverty.
