AMMAN — Prime Minister Bisher
Al-Khasawneh on Monday extended until December 31, 2022, the term until when
provisions of Defense Order No. 28 of 2021, issued under the provisions of
Defense Law No. 13 of 1992, related to the imprisonment of individuals who
default on their debts, are valid, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The decision aims to alleviate the difficult financial and economic
situation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, a Prime Ministry statement
said.
On Sunday, the Jordan Bar Association (JBA) urged the government to stop
extending the term of Defense Order No. 28 of 2021, and appealed to His Majesty
King Abdullah to suspend the provisions of the defense order, AmmanNet
reported.
JBA’s call came in a letter sent to Khasawneh.
JBA President Yahya Abu Aboud said the association’s request to abolish
the defense order was prompted by the fact that it was “causing financial
distress to Jordanians”.
Moreover, he said, the defense order is “contrary to the Royal Decree”,
which ordered the narrowest application of the Defense Law and guaranteeing
respect for private property.
Abu
Aboud said that calls for the Defense Order No 28 of 2021 to remain in force
ignore the problems caused by the lack of confidence in the legal system that
guarantees public order and protects the state’s supreme interests.
