AMMAN — The UN refugee agency
UNHCR said it needs
$46 million to provide 120,000 refugee families in Jordan with winter cash
assistance, given the growing instability of the social and economic situation
of refugees, Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

The UNHCR plan to increase the value of cash assistance to
prepare for winter 2022-2023 to the equivalent of $380 per household is in light
of the current inflation and high prices. It plans to begin disbursing the assistance
in Jordan during October.
UNHCR estimates that 3.4 million
Syrian and Iraqi refugees
require vital aid to help them prepare for and deal with the coming winter, in
Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt.
Therefore, the global agency requests $250 million to assist
them in those areas, before winter starts.
UNHCR in Jordan raised 42 percent of its financial
requirements for the current year, after warning that Jordan's refugee
situation would become a humanitarian crisis within months, if funding was not
urgently provided.
UNHCR's winter
strategy focuses on three areas: providing seasonal cash assistance to
vulnerable families to meet additional needs arising during winter, providing
essential winter relief items such as blankets and winter clothing, and secure
suitable water-resistant shelters, improve drainage systems and other
infrastructure projects in camps, and informal housing gatherings in
preparation for winter.
In Jordan, UNHCR needs
$40.9 million to provide cash assistance to 391,400 Syrian refugees who
constitute 106,622 families and $5 million to provide assistance to 26,000
Iraqi refugees and other nationalities.
