AMMAN — The Jordanian Labor Observatory
(JLO) has welcomed steps taken by government and the Social Security
Corporation’s Board of Directors in response to demands to cancel what it
described as “regressive” amendments to the Social Security Law, especially
with regard to health insurance, early retirement, and retirement calculation,
Amman Net reported Monday.

The observatory, which is affiliated with the Phenix
Center for Economic and Informatics Studies, said in a press statement that the government’s not passing the
regressive amendments in the draft law will contribute to strengthening social
protections in Jordan.
It reiterated the need to cancel the amendment that
prevents young people from enrolling in social security, and later receive
pensions, which eventually lowers their pensions and demotivates them from
subscribing to social security.
The observatory also asked that a decent health
insurance be designed for all social security subscribers and beneficiaries,
based on fair foundations and borne by government, employers, and subscribers.
