AMMAN — Moscow does not consider the decision to restrict the use of Jordanian airspace by Russian airlines as politically motivated or directed against Russia’s interests, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova was quoted as saying on Monday.

According to
Russia’s Novosti news agency, Zakharova said that the Jordanian aviation authorities imposed restrictions under pressure from the European Commission. The restrictions impacted some Russian airlines that carry tourists from Russia to Egypt, causing them to delay flights and choose alternative flight routes.
“The Federal Air Transport Agency and the
Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs are making active efforts to resolve this problem. At the same time, we act from the fact that Jordan is a friendly state, and we do not see that there are political motives behind the decision taken by Amman or that it is directed against the interests of our country,” she said.
“Russia hopes to address emerging concerns about the safety of domestic aircraft,” Zakharova added.
Russian civil aircraft have all the necessary documents to transit flights through Jordanian airspace, including insurance documents issued in accordance with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization, she added.
Since the restriction was introduced, Russian airlines asked to be allowed to fly over Syria since Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Eritrea, and Yemen refused to let Russian planes through their airspace to Egypt.
The ban on flights through Syria was introduced almost 10 years ago due to the war in the country.
