AMMAN — More than 16 rainwater-harvesting
pits in eastern Karak have helped provide water for cattlemen during the summer
and enhance the environment and agricultural activity in desert areas, while
constituting a key investment project in the field of water harvesting, the
Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The establishment of the harvesting pits
was a joint effort between the Ministry of Agriculture and the
Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army (JAF), which have put the concept of harvesting pits and domestic
wells into action in recent years, gathering large quantities of water that
would typically flood from the desert through the governorate’s valleys and go
to waste.

Agriculture Directorate Misbah Tarawneh said the harvesting pits have reached 70 percent of
their total capacity of 250,000 cubic meters thus far. He added that there are
more than 12,000 domestic wells distributed across the governorate.
To combat
climate change, he continued, the
ministry is working on a project to plant forests over an area of 3,000 dunums,
as well as conducting awareness campaigns on the importance of added-value
crops that do not require much irrigation.
