AMMAN — A judicial panel at the Amman Magistrate
Court handed four doctors varying prison sentences after convicting them of
involuntary manslaughter. This came after the court determined that a
liposuction surgery the doctors performed on a woman resulted in her death.

The medical personnel who were convicted include the
surgeon, who got three years in prison, a second surgeon and the
anesthesiologist, who got one year each, and another anesthesiologist, who got
six months.
The decision is subject to appeal before a higher court.
Court documents revealed that the woman was admitted to the hospital to have scar
revision surgery and liposuction, however, she then underwent additional
procedures while in the operating room, the Jordan News Agency, Petra,
reported.
The court also found that the surgeon who operated on the victim was not a
plastic surgeon, adding that he spent over three hours performing liposuction
and other surgeries in an operating room without an intensive-care operating
theater, despite the surgeries requiring it.
The defendants continued surgery despite the victim's condition worsening. They
also failed to provide proper autologous transfusion management, the court
said.
The Ministry of Health’s report stated that the victim's condition deteriorated
during a lengthy operation, and the attending physicians did not act in a
timely manner to save her life.
According to the ruling, one of the doctors operating on the victim was also
performing surgery on other patients at the same time, and he continued to
operate on the victim despite a serious drop in the patient's vital signs.
Public Prosecution witnesses testified that the chief surgeon removed seven
liters of fat during the operation, when the recommended amount is three to
four liters.
The victim underwent 12 hours of surgery, according to
witnesses, and the attending physician spent no more than an hour in the
operating room at any given time.
