AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and
Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Al-Safadi on Wednesday met
with the Russia Special Envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, to discuss
establishing security and stability in southern Syria and preventing the
smuggling of drugs from Syrian territory into Jordan, the Jordan News Agency,
Petra, reported.

Safadi emphasized that, while Jordan faces
threats from drug trafficking, terrorism, and militias in southern Syria, the Kingdom
is taking all necessary measures to combat these threats and hopes to work with
Russia to eliminate them.
Russia, according to the minister, is a key
player in the stability of southern Syria, along with its role in maintaining
de-escalation agreements and reconciliations reached in 2018.
Safadi and Lavrentiev emphasized the importance of Jordanian-Russian cooperation in tackling issues in southern Syria and moving forward with efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
Joint cooperation on a Syrian solutionThe minister reaffirmed that Jordan places
a high priority on finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis that also
meets the aspirations of the Syrian people, eradicates terrorism from Syria,
protects Syria's territorial integrity and unity, restores security, and
establishes the conditions for refugees to return voluntarily in accordance
with UN Resolution 2254, which supports “Syrian-led political process
facilitated by the United Nations”, according to the UN.
Safadi and Lavrentiev emphasized the
importance of Jordanian-Russian cooperation in tackling issues in southern
Syria and moving forward with efforts to find a political solution to the
Syrian crisis in accordance with Resolution 2254.
The minister applauded the UN Security
Council's adoption of another resolution (Resolution 2672), which will make it
easier for humanitarian aid to enter Syria across borders and meet the needs of
more than 4.1 million Syrians.
The Russian envoy praised the Kingdom for
its role in hosting Syrian refugees and in aiding international efforts to find
a political solution to the Syrian crisis. He stressed his country's commitment
to working with Jordan to stabilize southern Syria and address issues like drug
smuggling.
The visit of the Russian envoy is a
follow-up to the November visit of Russia’s Foreign Minister to Amman. During
his visit, Lavrentiev is leading a high-level delegation that also includes
several senior Russian officials from the Russian Ministries of Foreign Affairs
and Defense.
