Najjar was speaking at a meeting of the
Parliamentary Finance committee on Tuesday, during which participants discussed
the 2023 budget of the
Water Ministry and its affiliated departments.
The Kingdom’s per capita share of water is
continuously declining due to population growth and climate change, the
minister said, highlighting the importance of moving forward with the national project,
which will provide additional quantities of water to meet the Kingdom’s needs.
He expressed hopes that a project
implementation agreement would be signed before the end of the current year,
and drilling operations and project implementation would begin during the
second half of next year.
Najjar predicted that the project
implementation stage would take about four years.
The ministry floated
water and sanitation tenders worth JD600 million last year, and will implement projects during the
current year at a value of JD600–650 million.
In terms of sanitation services, the
Kingdom’s sanitation network coverage currently stands at 68 percent, he said,
mentioning plans by the ministry to raise the coverage to 70 percent.
