AMMAN — The National
Committee for the Defense of Teachers said that teachers in Jordan are facing
harassment inhibiting them from claiming their rights and reopening the
Jordanian Teachers’ Syndicate, Amman Net reported.

The committee said that it receives
several daily complaints from male and female
teachers concerning direct and
indirect harassment that hinders them from expressing their opinions and
supporting their colleagues to claim their rights and reinstate the teachers’
syndicate.
The committee called for the
immediate release of teacher and syndicate member Ramez Al-Batran, who was
arrested last week, condemning what it described as "repeated arrest and
an assault on personal freedom".
The Jordanian
Teachers’ Syndicate and
its branches remain closed, despite the fact that nearly six months have passed
since the official end date of its suspension, which was issued by the Amman Public
Prosecutor in 2020 for a period of two years.
Furthermore, the Ministry of
Education has not formed an interim committee to administer the work of the
syndicate and hold
elections for a new council, which it is required to do within
60 days under Article 27 of the Syndicates Law.
