Safadi, on Sunday, during a phone call from
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe
Lazzarini welcomed the decision of the UN General Assembly to extend the
UNRWA’s mandate in December.
He emphasized the centrality of
UNRWA’s role in providing vital services to 5.7 million Palestinian refugees in its
five areas of operations and in accordance with the UN mandate. Safadi also
highlighted its role in efforts to consolidate regional security and stability.
The UN agency needs to continue its operations until the Palestinian refugee
issue is resolved in accordance with relevant international references and
resolutions, he said, including Resolution No. 194. This is within a just and
comprehensive solution based on the two-state solution, which embodies the
establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with occupied
Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-June 4, 1967, he added.
Safadi called for diversifying UNRWA's funding sources and ensuring its sustainability,
within the framework of sharing the responsibility. He urged donors to make
multi-year pledges and adhere to them.
Lazzarini expressed appreciation for Jordan's efforts to mobilize international
support for the UNRWA.
