AMMAN — The Anti-Cybercrime Unit of
the Public Security Directorate (PSD) said on Tuesday that cybercrime-related
cases in Jordan have surged sixfold since 2015, according to the Jordan News Agency,
Petra.

In a statement, the unit explained that
cyber-crime cases rose from 2,305 in 2015 to 16,027 in 2022.
The unit attributed this increase to the
spread of technology, digital solutions, and smartphone applications, as well
as the expansion of the use of social networking sites and peoples' growing awareness
about their right to litigate, which increased the rate of crimes registered
with the unit.
A breakdown of cybercrimes registered in
2022The Cybercrime Unit highlighted its ongoing
informational campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of
cybercrime in
light of the widespread use of social networking sites, which have facilitated
cases of digital child abuse — with 133 cases registered with the unit in 2022
— and issues related to broadcasting hate speech and inciting strife, which
amounted to 113 cases.
Meanwhile, the Kingdom has witnessed an
increase in cases of digital fraud, which reached 2,118 in 2022, and extortion,
which totaled 1,285 cases. Last year, 3,769 defamation and libel cases were
registered with the unit, while cases involving online threats totaled 3,466
and hacking cases totaled 2,115.
Exercising cautionThe unit called on citizens who use social
networking sites to exercise caution and not provide or send any personal
information to unreliable parties.
The unit also stressed the need to monitor
children while they are using smart phones or computers, and not to leave them
vulnerable to abuse or bullying through networking sites or applications. It
also cautioned of the danger of video games that may cause psychological or
mental harm to young people.
