Press Release — The Canada-hosted 2023 FemParl Middle East
and North Africa conference opened today in Amman, Jordan. FemParl, an initiative
launched in 2018, stems from Canada’s commitment to gender equality and
empowerment, and its deep belief that women belong everywhere decisions are
being made.

“By bringing together women politicians and
leaders from across the region to learn from each other, build collaborative
relationships and engage in interactive discussions with subject-matter experts
from government, civil society and think tanks, FemParl aims to galvanize
efforts to advocate for more inclusive policies and to pave the way for more
women to engage in politics and take on leadership roles”, explained Ambassador
of Canada to Jordan, H.E. Tarik Ali Khan.
This year’s conference is focused on the challenge
posed by various forms of online violence for women actively engaged in the
public sphere, whether in politics, journalism or other fields.
The internet has become a vital space for
communication, information-sharing and connection, and an indispensable tool
for engaging in political and public life. At the same time, however, online
platforms are increasingly used as vectors for perpetrating violence and abuse
such as harassment, intimidation, disinformation, bullying, blackmail, defamation,
stalking and threats. The safe use of the internet is essential to women’s
political empowerment.
As observed by Jordan’s Minister of Social
Development, H.E. Wafa Bani Mustafa, who was a keynote speaker at the
conference, “women should not bear additional costs as a result of their
participation in public affairs or political work. A safe electronic space must
be provided for women involved in public affairs, in which society is aware of
the importance of women’s role as partners in decision-making”.
This year’s FemParl conference is the third
to be held in the MENA region. Previous conferences took place in Beirut and
Cairo (2019) and Tunis (2020). Delegates to the Amman conference come from
Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia, and the
Palestinian Territories.
