Speaking during a Lower House session
on Monday, which discussed a bill amending the Social Security Law of 2022,
Shamali said the amendments in question regulate the legal status of military
retirees before they reach the age of 45.
The amendments also stipulate an
additional year of service for personnel of the Jordan Armed Forces and security
agencies who were employed as of June 10, 2022, he noted.
Another amendment, he said, provides
additional benefits to divorced and separated women, especially those who
receive a percentage of the salary of a deceased husband or brother.
“The benefits that have been granted
are a kind of social protection for sisters and daughters,” he explained,
noting that the law aims to achieve “enhanced social protection for divorced or
widowed women by providing them with a share of the salary of a deceased father
or brother,” the
minister said.
Shamali confirmed that the benefits
provided under the amendments would not affect the SSC’s financial resources.
Furthermore, reductions in insurance
deductions stipulated in the new amendments would also have no negative impact
on the financial situation of the corporation, he said.
Investment lossesDuring the session, Deputy Abdel
Salam Al-Thiyabat said that initial amendments to the Social Security Law were
“a disaster” and thanked the government for withdrawing the previous version,
Ammon News reported.
He attributed the frequent amendments
to losses by the SSC
Investment Fund which, he said, had suffered JD270 million in
losses from investments in the hotel sector alone.
Thiyabat also voiced his opposition to
the idea that the Minister of Labor serve as the head of the
SSC board of
directors, and opposed amending the law at the present time, stating that it
should not be amended before 2025.
