AMMAN — Minister of Industry,
Trade, Supply, and Labor, Youssef Al-Shamali, said on Saturday that 92 percent
of Jordan's imports are not subject to customs duties because they come from
countries with
trade agreements with the Kingdom.

According to Al-Mamlaka TV, the
statement came during a meeting with the president and members of the
Jordan Chamber of Commerce on Saturday.
During the meeting, Shamali said that
the
Economic Modernization Vision seeks to appoint one million Jordanians
within 10 years at a rate of 100,000 annually.
He also praised the role of the
private sector in supporting the National Employment Program, adding that the
private sector is a strategic partner of the public sector, constituting 70
percent of the GDP.
He pointed out the importance of
addressing the challenges facing the private sector by forming sectoral
committees to identify problems and propose logical and realistic solutions to
serve the public interest.
Shamali indicated that a study to
develop a legal framework and correct the conditions of foreign workers is
underway. It aims to facilitate workers' movement from one sector to another
and address loopholes in laws.
Shamali also suggested forming a
steering committee to be headed by the trade minister and include general
secretaries and directors of institutions affiliated with the Ministry of
Industry,
Trade, and Supply. The committee will work with the commercial sector
and hold its meetings at least once every three months.
The head of the Jordan and
Amman Chambers of Commerce, Khalil Haj Tawfiq, stressed the importance of forming
specialized committees to diagnose problems and address the challenges facing
the sector, pointing to the importance of coming up with mechanisms that serve
the national economy considering the difficult circumstances it is going
through.
