AMMAN — Minister of Finance Mohamad Al-Ississ said, on
Monday, that the current government inherited
numerous struggles, the most
prominent of which is tax system distortion.

In the past decade, he added, the government dealt with this
distortion by raising consumer tax rates, including taxes on fuel, placing a
heavier burden on middle-class and low-income families.
From 2015 to 2019, he said,
fuel tax revenues have increased from
about JD463 million to about JD1.070 billion.
The economy has also suffered from missed opportunities and misplaced
priorities, he added.
The current government has developed fiscal policy directions that
include addressing distortions, imbalances, and loopholes in tax legislation to
combat tax evasion and address tax avoidance said Ississ. It has also introduced
legislative amendments that have contributed to increasing tax
compliance, expanding the base of taxpayers, and raising the efficiency of auditing and tax
collection, he added.
Ississ added that the customs tariff has been restructured and relevant
control authorities at the border crossings are now unified and integrated under
the umbrella of the Customs Department.
Accordingly, income from tax revenues will increase in 2023 by
approximately 14.4 percent, and sales tax revenues will rise by approximately
9.2 percent.
