AMMAN — Young Jordanian baker and entrepreneur Rabih Zureiqat announced Sunday the launch of a project to sell traditional non-GMO local bread made with 100 percent whole-wheat bread without adding any white flour, the news site Khaberni reported.اضافة اعلان

Zureiqat said the bread will be available at Qabalan bakeries or for delivery through an online application on Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays, starting from 12:30pm.

Zureiqat said that 97 percent of wheat used in Jordan is imported, while only three percent is grown locally for various reasons, among which is the spread of the urban sprawl at the expense of arable land, and the lifting of subsidies for Jordanian farmers which made sowing wheat commercially unviable.

He suggested that one way to support local farmers would be to buy wheat from local farmers at commercially viable prices, with JD0.1 could be added to every bag of flour sold in order to support local wheat farming.

Zureiqat said that white flour is made using only the endosperm of the wheat grain which is mostly starch and discards the bran and wheat germ which are rich in fiber and vitamin B as well as iron, copper, zinc magnesium, and anti-oxidants.
