A coalition of Palestinian political factions issued
a statement calling for a general strike across Jerusalem’s Palestinian schools
to protest Israel’s decision, according to the Palestinian news agency, Wafa.
The coalition called on the international community
to pressure Israel to stay out of the affairs of Palestinian schools in
Jerusalem.
On Saturday, Palestinian parents and students held
protests in several neighborhoods of the city against attempts by Israel to
prevent a school from using the official Palestinian curriculum.
Protestors chanted slogans including “No to the
distorted curriculum” and voiced their rejection of the Israeli curriculum,
according to Wafa.
Earlier this month, the Parents Committee, a body
representing parents of Palestinian schoolchildren in occupied Jerusalem, said
Israeli officials had printed textbooks similar to those used by the
Palestinian ministry of education but with material such as the Palestinian
flag, national symbols, and other terms and historical facts omitted or
changed.
