JoPetrol and Jordan Gas Sign Strategic Agreement to Launch “Watani” – The National Advanced Natural Gas Company – to Enhance Energy Sustainability in Jordan

Under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Jordan Petroleum Products Marketing Company (JoPetrol) and Jordan Liquefied Gas Company announced today the signing of a strategic agreement to establish the National Advanced Natural Gas Company – Watani.

This strategic initiative is part of a national vision aimed at increasing reliance on local energy sources and enabling Jordanian economic sectors to access clean, reliable, and efficient energy solutions. "Watani" will specialize in the purchase, processing, transportation, sale, and supply of natural gas from the Risha Field to national industries, various economic sectors, and CNG bus refueling stations.

Speaking on the occasion, Eng. Khaled Al-Zoubi, Director General of JoPetrol, stated:
"The establishment of Watani is a foundational and strategic step within our vision for a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable energy future. It reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering integrated solutions that support the national economy. This partnership with Jordan Gas aligns with our mutual approach of adopting alternative, clean energy sources and expanding reliance on local resources, which will enhance the competitiveness of Jordanian industries and reduce operational energy costs. It also reflects our belief in the vital role of the private sector in supporting the national economy and contributing to a secure, sustainable energy future for Jordan."

Mr. Salah Al-Khazaleh, Director General of Jordan Liquefied Gas Company, emphasized that this project is the result of years of dedicated efforts to fulfill the company’s vision of advancing toward sustainable and clean energy while utilizing national resources to support industries and the economy.
"Today, we witness the birth of a new natural gas and energy facility in the Kingdom, which will be a key contributor to achieving economic, social, and environmental security. It aligns fully with the economic modernization plan and the strategic objectives of the energy sector, focused on diversifying energy sources, improving the use of local resources, and increasing investment in this vital field."

The Watani project represents the aspirations of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to achieve energy supply security by promoting the use of domestic sources. Transporting gas from the Risha Field to various economic sectors is a key pillar of Jordan’s national energy strategy.

The Jordanian government's support—through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, the Ministry of Interior, Public Security Directorate, Civil Defense, and other concerned governmental bodies—was critical in providing the necessary regulatory framework. This included issuing permits and legislation, which helped overcome regulatory challenges and paved the way for the success of this pioneering initiative.

Watani now stands as one of the most prominent national initiatives that unites the efforts of the public and private sectors to achieve sustainable development and fulfill the goals of the Economic Modernization Vision 2033. It strengthens Jordan’s reliance on domestic energy sources and positions the Kingdom as a regional model in the shift toward clean and sustainable energy economies.
