AMMAN — Against the
backdrop of the Kingdom welcoming successive influxes of displaced people over
the course of decades, 95 per cent of Jordanians indicate that they are
sympathetic towards
refugees fleeing conflict or persecution, as stated in a press
release published on Wednesday by the UN Refugee Agency.

The finding, part of a survey
commissioned by the
UNHCR on
Jordanian perceptions towards refugees, confirms
the results of similar studies conducted since 2020.
In the survey, 91 per cent of
Jordanians expressed the belief that Jordan hosts large numbers of refugees,
and half of respondents noted that the international community “needs to do
more” to support refugees in Jordan.
“It is heart-warming to see that after all those years, Jordanians still hold empathy towards those forced to flee conflict and persecution even at a time of economic challenges.”
Meanwhile, three out of four
Jordanians favored the inclusion of refugees in national systems, such as
public education and health services.
‘Consistent’ hospitality“It is heart-warming to see that
after all those years, Jordanians still hold empathy towards those forced to
flee conflict and persecution even at a time of economic challenges”, said
UNHCR Representative to Jordan, Dominik Bartsch, in the press release.
“The consistent level of
hospitality that we see in practice every day, is truly remarkable from a
global perspective.”
Jordanians’ take on refugee
budgets, organizationsThe survey, conducted by Headway
Jordan in November 2022, reflects the views of nearly 3,300 Jordanians residing
across all the Kingdom’s governorates.
Earlier editions of the survey
have observed the perceptions of refugees biannually since October 2020.
Compared to a previous edition released earlier in 2022, fewer Jordanians (53
percent against 60 percent) held the view that budgets spent on refugees were
“high”.
The survey also analyzed how the
UNHCR is perceived, and found that Jordanians see the UNHCR as an organization
that understands and feels the struggle of refugees.
