In a radio statement on Sunday morning, Huneifat said that recently,
deforestation activities have
decreased in Ajloun and Jerash. However, the
ministry was prompted to coordinate with the Public Security Directorate (PSD)
on efforts to combat forest encroachment following deforestation in the Naour
area a year and a half ago, Al-Rai daily reported.
The ministry and the PSD were able to track
down two gangs consisting of six people who were
cutting down trees, and
arrested them. “They are now in prison and will receive deterrent punishment to
curb this dangerous activity threatening Jordan’s forests,” the minister said.
Huneifat called on citizens to cooperate
with the ministry in its efforts to halt deforestation by calling its hotlines.
The ministry, he said, is ready to follow up on any information that serves the
country.
“Our battle to preserve our
trees and forests is ongoing,” Huneifat said. “We are talking about the impact of climate
change, and we are also talking about the global increase in fuel prices and
its effect on forest encroachment.”
In Ajloun and Jerash, he noted, tree
prunings are distributed by administrative governors and local bodies to the
poor and those facing difficult economic conditions.
