AMMAN — The Japanese ambassador to
Amman,
Okuyama Jiro, has expressed Japan's desire to expand regional
cooperation with Jordan to contribute to achieving peace and stability in the
Middle East. The ambassador made the statement during a ceremony celebrating
Japan's national day at the Japanese embassy in Amman on Tuesday evening, as reported
by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
70th anniversary of diplomatic
relationsDuring his speech, the envoy
highlighted that 2024 will mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of
diplomatic relations between Japan and Jordan. He praised the Kingdom's
humanitarian role in providing shelter and necessary services to refugees, and
the Japanese support for Jordan in this field.
On the Palestinian issue, the
ambassador added that Japan had been providing assistance to UNRWA since 1953,
even before becoming a member of the UN.
He stated that 2023 marks the
70th anniversary of Japan's ties with UNRWA, and that Japan strongly supports the
two-state solution based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions and
international law.
BusinessThe ambassador also noted that some
Japanese multinational companies are covering their regional business from
their offices in Amman, and that the "agreement between Japan and Jordan
for the Promotion and Protection of Investment" took effect in August
2020.
He emphasized that Japan is keen to
extend further cooperation with Jordan, in line with new global targets such as
green transition, sustainable development, and care for vulnerable groups,
women's empowerment, and gender equality.
The ceremony was attended by a number
of ministers, officials, diplomats, journalists, and guests. Minister of Culture,
Haifaa Al-Najjar, emphasized the
striking similarities between Jordan and Japan, with each representing a story of renaissance and working for peace. She
hailed the bilateral relations and joint cooperation in various domains.
