AMMAN — Petra saw a significant
spike in tourist numbers, with a 147 percent increase in January visitors,
breaking the record when compared to figures reported in the same month of
2019.

The previous record for the highest
number of visitors to
Petra was 1.135 million in 2019, according to the Jordan
News Agency, Petra.
According to the Petra Development
and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), a total of 82,937 tourists
visited Petra in January, with 72,294 being foreign visitors, 7,112 being Jordanian, and
2,684 being Arab. In comparison, 56,559 people visited Petra in January 2019,
and 30,287 visitors in January 2022.
According to the
Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority's (PDTRA)
count, a total of 82,937 tourists visited the red-rose city in January, of
which 72,294 are foreigners, 7,112 are Jordanians, and 2,684 are Arabs.
In January 2019, a total of 56,559 people
visited Petra, while in January 2022,
the lost city welcomed 30,287 visitors.
COVID-19 recoverySuliman Farajat, Chairman of the
PDTRA, stated that the tourism in
Petra promptly recovered from the impacts of
the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022 and predicts that 2023 will break the previous
record of 1.135 million visitors.
He added that the PDTRA is also working
on a new tourism track for four-wheel-drive vehicles and is preparing to
introduce a flying taxi and hot air balloon service for visitors.
The flying taxi, he added, will take
visitors on tours around the site and potentially transport from and to Amman.
